Awkward Tongue
Commision for the DutchEmbassy of Yemen
Asim and Xaver, though separated by thousands of kilometers and different cultures, share a connection to the sea. Through long phone calls, they discovered mutual feelings of both belonging and alienation to their respective homes. Their visual exchange, Awkward Tongue, uses the Dutch and Yemeni coasts as spaces for reflection on identity and water.
This project is part of Met by the Ocean, the first collaborative art initiative for emerging Yemeni visual storytellers. It connects Yemeni and Dutch artists across mediums like painting, photography, writing, design, and film. Led by Yemeni artist Thana Faroq in the Netherlands, the initiative fostered intimate artistic correspondences, encouraging playful and experimental explorations of ‘Home.’
Met by the Ocean was funded by the Dutch Embassy in Yemen.
